Magic in Vendici

Mages are damned rare, you got that boy? I don’t care what that storyteller over at the Cigno Taverna says, the age of fireballs and manabolts in the street is over, and good riddance. Most mages these days are locked up tight by one of the Houses, or a Guild, or even one of those god-damned banking clans. No, you numbskull, they’re not literally locked up – well, maybe some of ‘em are – I mean they’re working ‘exclusively’ for their employers, and they’re not given a whole lot of choice about leaving and going anywhere else. Mages are the only way the hoighty-toighty can get their cyphers… ah, I see your storyteller’s been filling your head with tales about those too, has he? Well, he’s probably closer to the mark there. Potions, charms, magic amulets, even that damned alchemical blackpowder they’re making these days. Not that the likes of you or I will ever be able to afford one. But you listen here lad: you ever see anyone with even the slightest whiff of magic about ‘em, you give ‘em a wide berth. I don’t care if he’s a full on grand wizard, robes and all, or just some roof-climbing stiletta with a trick or two. Magic is dangerous to normal folk, and not just in its own right – people kill each other over it, and there’s no call to be getting yourself killed. Your grandma’d kill me too, then where’d be we?
